MnDOT's Rethinking I-94 team is coming to Bryn Mawr! On Tuesday, September 2, we will hear about potential future designs for the section of I-94 east of downtown Minneapolis to downtown St Paul. We will gather at 5:30pm in front of Big Hill Books (405 Penn Ave S) for a short walking tour, and 6:30pm in Big Hill Books Basement (405 Penn Ave S) for a presentation and community conversation about the Rethinking I-94 project. You can join for either or both events.
Note that this is an entirely separate project from the I-394 construction currently underway in Bryn Mawr. The Rethinking I-94 project by MnDOT (the Minnesota Department of Transportation) is a long-term process to engage community members who live, work, commute and play along the 7.5-mile segment of I-94 between Hwy 55/Hiawatha Ave in Minneapolis and Marion St. in St. Paul.
If you plan to attend, it may be helpful to review resources in advance:
MnDOT's project webpage, which includes a story map of the latest recommendations on roadway designs (called "alternatives"), released earlier in 2025. This includes No Build, Maintenance-B, Reduced Freeway, and Reconfigured Freeway.
A video on I-94 from former traffic planner and urbanist CityNerd, highlighting the harms of the freeway
The open letter expressing concerns with MnDOT’s recommendation to stop studying the environmental, equity, and public health benefits of highway removal via the at-grade alternative
Come with questions for MnDOT! Refreshments will be provided. The BMNA Active Transportation Committee is partnering with MnDOT to host the event. Feel free to email us at activetransit@bmna.org for any reason.
Please RSVP to activetransit@bmna.org so we can get a head count for snacks!
